PSHEE & Citizenship

Being a Philosopher - Personal Social Health Economic Education and Citizenship

PSHE and Citizenship is continually promoted at Corsham Primary through Circle Time, Assemblies, School Council, Playground Buddies, Peer Mediators, Listening Friends and Eco-Buddies.

The school has been awarded the Wiltshire Healthy Schools Gold Award in recognition of our sustained commitment to the health and wellbeing of our children. We have also been awarded the BIG Award for excellence in bullying intervention.

At Corsham Primary School, we have chosen to use ‘Jigsaw PSHE’ to support the delivery of our PSHE lessons and ensure that all teachers are tackling age appropriate issues.

Please use the links below to see our PSHE Policy, Sex and Relationships Policy and to view the Jigsaw PSHE Parent/Carer information guide.

Sex Education

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is taught within the personal, social and health education (PSHE) curriculum. Biological aspects of RSE are taught within the science curriculum. Puberty is taught as a statutory requirement of Health Education and is covered by our Jigsaw PSHE Programme in the ‘Changing Me’ Puzzle (unit).

Parents’ right to request their child be excused from Sex Education

Parents and carers do not have the right to withdraw their children from Relationships or Health Education which involves teaching about puberty. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from the non-statutory components of sex education within RSE. The school will inform parents and carers of this right through the newsletter in the Summer Term before the Changing Me Puzzle is taught.

Child Withdrawal Procedures

  1. Parents to notify the Head of School in writing that they wish their child to be withdrawn from Sex and Relationship Education.
  2. Head of School invites parents into school to discuss worries and to decide which parts of the Sex and Relationship Programme the child will be withdrawn from and to agree what the child will do while the others are having Sex and Relationship Education.
  3. Head of School to write to parents confirming discussion and agreement with a reply slip.
