Welcome to our October edition

Message from Mrs Parker

As the autumn term moves on and the weather begins to turn cooler, please make sure your child brings a named coat to school each day. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful outdoor spaces and will continue to make the most of them throughout the season, enjoying fresh air, exploration and outdoor learning, even when the weather is a little wetter or chillier.

This month, we are excited to welcome the school photographer, who will be taking individual and sibling photographs. To help everyone look their very best, please ensure children wear their full school uniform, including their Corsham Primary sweatshirt or fleece.

We have also been delighted to welcome prospective parents and carers into school recently and to share the many wonderful things that make Corsham Primary such a special place to learn and grow. If you know of families considering school places, tours can be booked through the school office by email or telephone, and all dates can be found in the Admissions section of our website.

Mrs Griffin is busy planning a fantastic range of Forest School experiences for the children this term. Our younger children will be creating a teddy bear treasure hunt, while older pupils will be exploring nature through leaf printing, making and decorating clay dishes, as well as developing practical outdoor skills through den building, knot tying, whittling and many other creative adventures. We know the children will thoroughly enjoy these opportunities to learn, explore and have fun outdoors.

Finally, a gentle reminder to help us keep everyone safe at the start and end of the school day. We ask all children and families to ride bikes and scooters carefully and respectfully on their journey to and from school, taking particular care around cars, pedestrians and other road users near the school site. Please also ensure that bikes and scooters are parked neatly and safely in the designated racks. We encourage children to wear helmets whenever possible and to be mindful of younger children and families as they travel around the school grounds. Thank you for working with us to keep our school community safe, happy and welcoming for everyone.

Maths News from our Lead Mathematicians

In the last academic year, our Maths curriculum has been enhanced through the use of LBQ for our Year 5 and 6 children. This has been an amazing resource which supports children in learning and applying the necessary maths skills needed to be successful mathematicians. LBQ is a computer program which gives individual feedback in the moment to both the pupils and teachers. It enables pupils to learn from their mistakes and see their successes. It helps to identify areas of misconception and aids teachers' planning to ensure that pupils at Corsham Primary School are achieving their best.

Children have told us that they enjoy using LBQ and that LBQ helps them to become more confident mathematicians. We are delighted to let you know, that following on from a successful year of using LBQ to support our current scheme, 80% of pupils at Corsham Primary achieved the expected standard in our key stage 2 maths SATs papers.

We are excited to see how LBQ will continue to contribute towards the teaching and learning of Maths at Corsham Primary School.

Our Children Take Over the School Day!

Pound Pill - The Super Sustainable Squad (SSS Party):

Pupils take the lead for a day of creativity, sustainability and fun

There was a little bit of a role reversal at school as pupils were given the opportunity to help take charge of the school day, with a special programme of activities designed around creativity, sustainability and caring for our planet.

For our Key Stage 1 children, the day began with an introduction to what lay ahead before getting creative with an art competition. Armed with paper, pens and pencils, the children had the chance to use their imaginations and produce their own wonderful artwork.

After all that creativity, pupils enjoyed an extended morning break, giving them extra time to play with their friends before returning to the classroom for another hands-on challenge.

Next came junk modelling, where children were challenged to turn everyday unwanted materials into imaginative sculptures. As well as being great fun, the activity encouraged pupils to think creatively about how things we might normally throw away can be reused and given a completely new purpose.

The morning concluded with a class circle time focusing on sustainability and the charity being supported through the day. Children discussed why looking after our environment matters and worked together to come up with practical ideas for things their own class could do to become more sustainable.

After lunch, the environmental theme continued with activities inspired by Sir David Attenborough. Children took part in a class activity before watching an age-appropriate David Attenborough programme or clip, helping them to think further about the natural world and the importance of protecting our planet.

The day finished with a whole-school assembly, providing an opportunity to bring everyone back together after a busy day of learning, creativity and fun.

The special day gave pupils the chance to have their voices heard, enjoy a different kind of school day and, most importantly, think about the positive difference they can make to their environment.

Broadwood: The Animal Warriors take the reins

Following the hard-fought Year 5 Elections last academic year, the Animal Warriors Party stepped into the spotlight today, Tuesday 1 October, to run the school for the day.

The party, comprising Prime Minister, Theodore G, Deputy Prime Minister, Millie L, Treasurer, Georgia S, Logistics Officer, Margot J and Media Officer, Beau D, planned some fun activities for pupils around their manifesto which was focused on sustainability.

During the course of the day, children learnt about sustainability, taking part in an animal drawing competition, using recycled paper and learning materials, spending time outdoors, litter picking and collecting fallen fruit from the trees in the orchard.

The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minster, visited classes to see their manifesto in action, enlisting the help of their Assistant, Mr Breese, to ensure their commitments ran smoothly.

Children were encouraged to wear their own clothes to school in return for a 50p donation to the RSPCA which has raised over £200 for the charity so far.

Prime Minister, Theodore, commented: “Today’s going to be the BEST day”, while Deputy Prime Minister, Millie, added: “Save the plants and animals. Save the world!”

A huge well done to all of our children for embracing the day with such enthusiasm and imagination!

Attendance

Corsham Primary School supports the principles, practice and procedures outlined in the recently updated DfE School Attendance document. We believe pupils can only take full advantage of their education by regular and punctual attendance at school to ensure continuity of learning.

September attendance across both sites was 94%

Unauthorised absences across both sites was 5.5%

Number of late arrivals across both sites was 0.36%

We would remind parents and carers how important it is for children to arrive at school on time, ready to begin their learning day calmly and positively.

If your child is absent, please telephone the school and leave a message on the office answerphone, clearly stating the reason for the absence. This is essential so that our daily registers are accurate and reflect why a child is not in school.

If your child will be absent due to a planned event, we ask that you complete a Leave of Absence form. These are available from the school office or can be found at the bottom of the home page on our website.

Thank you for your continued support with helping us keep our records accurate and ensuring the best start to the day for all our children.
